When guests ask us where to eat real Macedonian food in Skopje, Dva Elena ("Two Deer") is the name we give first. It sits on a wooded slope in Kozle, on the southwest side of the city below Vodno, and it has held the top spot among Skopje restaurants for years for a reason. Tree trunks grow up through the decking, vines wrap the posts, and the whole place feels like a countryside escape that happens to be a ten to fifteen minute ride from the apartments.

Order the way the locals do. Start with mixed meze and the homemade bread, which is good enough that people talk about it on the way home, then move to grilled meat or a steak. The dish to seek out is anything "pod sac" (slow-cooked under a metal bell over coals), which you will not find done this well in many places. Pair it with a Macedonian red from their wine list; this is one of our favorite spots in town for an easy, unhurried bit of Skopje wine tasting.

The atmosphere is rustic but not rough: wood, stone, warm light, and a lot of greenery. Portions are generous and the value is excellent by any standard, with a full meal and drinks landing in the mid-range for the city. It is family-friendly and the terrace under the trees is the place to be in the warm months.

Come for dinner, and if you want the full experience, come on a Friday or Saturday night when there is live traditional Macedonian folk music later in the evening. The kitchen runs daily from late morning, so a long lunch on the terrace works too. It is popular and often full, so book ahead; reservations are genuinely worth it here.

Getting there is simple. A taxi or rideshare from Debar Maalo or Macedonia Square is quick and cheap, and there is free parking on site. The determined can walk it in roughly half an hour, mostly uphill, which is a fine warm-up if you are already heading toward the Vodno cable car and the Millennium Cross. Either way, of all the things to do in Skopje, an evening at Dva Elena is the one we send guests off to most often.
