If you want Skopje wine tasting without surrendering a whole day to it, this is the one we send people to first. Chateau Kamnik is a real chateau sitting in its own vineyards on the hills east of the city, twin turrets and a glass terrace looking back over the rooftops, and it is barely 20 minutes by car from the apartments. You head out to the eastern edge of the city, climb a little, and the city drops away beneath the vines.

Kamnik more or less wrote the modern chapter of Macedonian wine. The grape to ask about is vranec, the deep indigenous red the country does better than anyone, and Kamnik's Terroir Vranec has the Decanter gold to prove the point. The Ten Barrels Cabernet and Syrah hold their own against anything imported, and if you prefer white, the aromatic Temjanika is the local one to try. A guided visit walks you through the vineyard, the production floor and the barrel cellar, then sits you down to taste with a view.

A word from experience: book the package that includes food rather than the bare tasting. The pours on the cheapest option are modest, and the eating here is genuinely good. The restaurant beside the winery leans into game and grill alongside Macedonian and international dishes, and in summer the terrace over the vineyards is the place you want to be at golden hour. The multi-course meal with wine pairing is the full version of the day.

Getting there is simplest by taxi or car; it is a short, cheap ride from central Skopje and far easier than wrestling with directions yourself. Tastings and tours run by reservation only, so call ahead or let us help you arrange it before you set out. The daytime tasting window is roughly mid-morning to late afternoon, but the kitchen runs into the evening for the pairing dinners, so timing flexes around your booking.

Best season is late spring through autumn, when the summer terrace is open and the vines are green; harvest in September is the most atmospheric, and sunset is the shot everyone comes home with. If you cannot make the drive but still want the bottles, Kamnik keeps a wine shop in the centre near the river, a short walk from Debar Maalo. Either way, it is the easiest great day trip from Skopje on this list, and the one we point to first.
